Joy, E.H., Sig., 1917
On the Arras Memorial is the name of 38096 Private Ernest Hardy Joy, serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers who died 09/04/1917.

Angela Conroy has sent in this transcript from Whitley Seaside Chronicle & Visitors' Gazette 05/05/1917:

The Death of Signaller E. H. Joy
Signaller Ernest Hardie Joy was but 22 years of age when he made the supreme sacrifice for his country.

He was an old Park School boy, and as a youth was keenly interested in the Boy Scout movement, becoming a member of the St George's Cullercoats troop.

He joined the Northern Cyclists shortly after the start of the war - being then a cashier with the Prudential Assurance Company, Darlington Branch - and went out to France in July 1916, being attached to the Northumberland Fusiliers (23rd) Signal Section.

Signaller Joy was first reported wounded and missing.

Official intimation was, however, received by his parents on Sunday last that their son had been killed in action on Easter Tuesday, the 9th April.

He is remembered in Whitley Bay on W84.01, W84.02, W84.10 and in W84.30, on page 20
