Jean Longstaff has submitted the following:-
Born on 6th January 1885 in Whitley Bay to retired beer merchant Edward Amory Jardine and his second wife Jane (nee Richardson), young Edward was the oldest sibling, after him came Ethel Isabella and George William also born in Whitley Bay, and then came younger siblings Dora Adeline, Hilda Margery and Robert Stuart born whilst living at Marine Avenue, Monkseaton.
Edward arrived in Canada in 1905 and started to farm at Moore Park, Manitoba, and five years later he was joined by his younger brother George. George enlisted in the CEF in 1916, and as at that time farmers were exempt from call-up Edward remained at the farm. By 1918 the government reneged on their deal not to draft farmers and on 5th January 1918 Edward was conscripted into the 1st Depot Battalion, Manitoba Regiment in Brandon.
Arriving in England in mid April Private 2129010 was posted to the 18th reserve Battalion at Seaford and remained there until posted to the 78th (Winnipeg Grenadiers) Battalion in France joining them a Quarry Wood on 2nd October, just as that unit went into divisional reserve in billets behind the lines. The 78th spent about two weeks in billets, and then took part in the final advance on Mons, getting as far as Quievrechain, Belgium. Although the 78th saw some combat during this advance, based on war diary remarks, Edward's war would have consisted mainly of receiving the gratitude of French and Belgian citizens as their towns were liberated. They were relieved on 6th November and marched to billets at Anzin where they celebrated the Armistice.
The 78th Battalion returned to England in May 1919, and Edward took his discharged in London on 7th June. He visited his family in Sunderland and in April 1920, along with his younger sister Dora, returned to the farm in Canada. After his brother George returned to England in 1923 Edward farmed alone until Dora married Herbert Sharpley in 1927, and they lived at and helped run the farm with Edward until 1967 when he retired and moved to live in Brandon. Dora’s son Herb then took over the farm.
Edward died at Brandon, Manitoba on 6th February 1968, and is buried at Rosewood Memorial Gardens in Brandon.
Edward Amory Jardine is remembered in Whitley Bay on W84.30 page 11
