WHITLEY BAY

Campey, M., Pte., 1914-18 (1980)
Jean Longstaff has submitted the following:-

Born on the 7th May 1899 to Yorkshire born bricklayer Tom Campey and his wife Margaret (nee Lister) Michael was brought up with his siblings Joseph, George, Thomas, Elizabeth, Rhoda, Flora, Mark and Mabel Margaret living at 17 Hill Heads, Monkseaton.

During WW1 Michael enlisted with the Durham Light Infantry as Private 80857 and was wounded during fighting in July 1918 around Cuitron, and ended his war in the Labour Corps.

Married in December 1919 to May Gibson their first child George was born in 1920, followed by Marjorie two years later. The 1939 Register show the family living at 14 Priory Avenue, Whitley Bay with Michael working as a sanitary labourer for the Health department.

Michael Campey died in Whitley Bay in July 1980, a year before his wife.

His brothers George, Joseph William and Tom also served in WW1.

Les Campey says:

I would like to give the North East War Memorial Project site some added family content on my late Grand Father Michael Campey. My Grandparents had four children:George (1920-1979) ; Marjorie-Turney (1922-2014) Zina-Young (1924-2007) ; Derek - 1940 to present.

Thank you for continuing to honour my Grandfathers and his three brothers service to their country.
