Dalby, A.A., Capt., awarded the M.C. 1919
The Newcastle Daily Chronicle 08/07/1919 reports:

'Capt. A.A. Dalby, Tank Corps, son of the Rev. L.B. Dalby, formerly of Whitley Bay and Gosforth, has been awarded the Military Cross. The official record states that the award was made for conspicuous gallantry and initiative as Tank Commander on Nov. 20, 1917, near Marcoing. It was of great importance to hold the bridges over the canal, and in face of heavy fire he made straight for the main railway bridge in time to prevent the enemy running out a wire and blowing it up. He shot the man with the wire and beat off a counter attack. Later, in the attack on Fontaine, he fought most gallantly against heavy odds until his tank was knocked out and the crew killed or wounded. He did fine work. Capt. Dalby was born at Whitley Bay.'
