In St. Sever Cemetery, Rouen is the Commonwealth War Grave of 11978 Private William Dennison Murton, serving with the Durham Light Infantry who died 16/09/1916.

In Whitley Bay (Hartley South) Cemetery is a family headstone which reads:

In loving memory of
Sgt. J.F. Murton D.L.I.
Died from wounds received in action
On the Somme Oct. 5th 1916
Aged 33 years.
Also his brother
Pte. W.D. Murton D.L.I.
Died from wounds received in action
On the Somme Septr. 16th 1916
Buried at Rouen, France
Aged 25 years.
