In Skew Bridge Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of Tyneside 4/201 Able Seaman Clarence Hately, serving with the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, who died 14/06/1915.

In Whitley Bay (Hartley South) Cemetery is a family headstone which reads:

In
Loving Memory of
John
beloved husband of
Sarah Annie Hately
who died March 19th 1917
aged 58 years
Also Clarence their son
who was killed in action near
the Dardanelles, June 14th 1915
aged 18 years.
And the above
Sarah Annie Hately,
died August 9th 1931
Aged 66 years.

Colin Boyd has provided the following:

Clarence was born on January 1st 1896. He was working as a fitter when he enlisted in the RND on April 15th 1914. He was posted to Gallipoli where he died of wounds on June 13th 1915.

Clarence's death was described in the diary of Surgeon Williamson as follows: " About 5:30 or 6:00 pm a gun from the Achi Baba direction landed a 6" shell in our camp. One of our servants was lifted in the air and thrown about twenty feet. He never regained consciousness and died in about half an hour."

At the time of his enlistment Clarence was living with his parents, John and Sarah Annie Hately at 15, Clovelly Gardens, Whitley Bay.
