In Etaples Military Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of 24/1063 Corporal Thomas Callaghan serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers (Tyneside Irish) 24th Battalion who died 04/05/1917.

Derek Johnstone has provided the following:

Thomas Callaghan was born at Willington Quay, Northumberland in 1897. His parents were Charles Callaghan from Ireland and Elizabeth Callaghan who was from Norton, Yorkshire.

The 1901 Census shows that Thomas was 4 years old and living with his parents at Stephenson Street, Willington Quay, Northumberland. His father Charles was employed as a lead works labourer. Siblings in the house at this time included Maggie 16, Catherine 14, James 11, Charles 9, John 7 and Peter 2.

Details of Thomas in the 1911 Census were not located.

Military records show that Thomas enlisted at Wallsend on Tyne and died of wounds. His Pension Index Cards shows only his mother Elizabeth Callaghan, an indication he was not married.

He is remembered in Willington Quay on W56.01
