In Tynemouth (Preston) Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave with a private headstone of Master Charles Earl, serving with the Merchant Navy who died 21/07/1940.

The headstone reads:

In Memory Of
My Dear Husband
Charles Earl, Master Mariner
Killed By Enemy Action
21st July 1940 Aged 40 Years
Mary G. His Dear Wife
Died 8th July 1985 Aged 85 Years
At rest

S.S. Terlings of 2318 tons was hit by a bomb from an aircraft off the Isle of Wight 21st July 1940. Lost 10 Crew.
