Birkett, A., Sgt., 1944

In Bolsena War Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of 1077732 Sergeant Arthur Birkett, serving with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve who died 18/07/1944.

The Shields Daily News 01/08/1944 reports:

Sergeant A. Birkett, a Wireless Operator Air Gunner in the R.A.F.V.R., aged 31, has been reported killed in an operation last month. Sergt. Birkett is the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. A. Birkett of 88 Lansdowne Terrace, North Shields, and joined the R.A.F. when he was 18.

He formerly worked in the L.N.E.R. Goods office, Tynemouth. He was a native of North Shields, and was educated at the Spring Gardens and Ralph Gardner School.

Sgt. Birkett’s squadron was operating from either Tarquinia or Cecina, both in Italy, using Douglas Boston Mark III aircraft.
