Thompson, W., Cabin Boy, 1940

On the Tower Hill Memorial is the name of Cabin Boy William Thompson, serving with the Merchant Navy who died 31/05/1940.

The Shields Daily News17/09/1942 reads:

"His brother William (Billy) Thompson who was also serving in the Merchant Navy was lost at sea two years ago. (The date 1940 is added in ink). He attended Ralph Gardner School and worked at the London and Newcastle Tea Co. at North Shields before going to sea. He was 18 years of age and was serving as a cabin boy.

Mr. and Mrs. Thompson have two other sons serving with the Forces. Their eldest son George is in the Royal Navy and another son Norman is serving in the Army. They also have a daughter on war work."

William Thompson is remembered in Newcastle on NUT136 and on our List of Ships’ crews.
