Norman Henry Carlyon was born in Tynemouth, Northumberland, in 1891 the son of Caroline Richards and Richard Carlyon. In 1901, 9 year old Norman was living in Long Benton, Northumberland with his parents Richard and Caroline and his four siblings - Selina (22), Earnest (19), Ursula (13) and Phillip (11). Norman's maternal grandmother, Ursula Richards, also lived with the family. Norman's father, Richard, listed his employment as 'Superintendent Photographer'.

Norman was a patient in a convalescent home at Gilisland, Carlisle. He was aged 19 and his occupation was listed as 'butcher'.

Silver War Badge recipient number 77746, 15th December 1916, Cause of discharge Wounds 392 (xvi). Discharge date: 24th September 1915.

Philip Richard Carlyon was born in 1889 the son of Caroline Mary and Richard Carlyon.
