Gibson, E., A/Smn., 1917
On the Thiepval Memorial is the name of Tyneside Z/1734 Able Seaman Edward Gibson, serving with the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve who died 04/02/1917.

Colin Boyd has provided the following:

Edward was born on 2nd April 1895 and was working as a miner, living with his parents, Anthony and Frances at 15, Double Row, Bates Cottages, Seaton Delaval when he enlisted in the Royal Naval Division on 13th November 1914. He joined the 3rd Platoon, "A" Company of the Collingwood Division on 4th February 1915 and then transferred to the Hood Battalion on 8th June 1915.

After going sick with Rheumatism on 25th September 1915 Edward rejoined the Hood Battalion on 24th February 1916 and served until 11th November 1916 when he went sick with Rose Measles.

He rejoined the Hood Battalion on 25th November 1916 and was granted UK leave on 7th December 1916.

After rejoining the Battalion in France on 19th December 1916 Edward was posted as missing later reported as killed in action on 4th February 1917.

Edward Gibson is remembered in Holywell on H67.02
