Joseph was born on 17th February 1886. He was working as a miner living with his parents, Edward and Mary Rowbottom at 14, Burn Row, East Holywell when he enlisted in the Royal Naval Division on 2nd November 1914.
He joined the 4th Platoon, "A" Company of the Collingwood Battalion on 4th February 1915 and served in Gallipoli. Joseph died from the effects of a gun shot wound to the abdomen in the 11th Casualty Clearing Station on 5th June 1915.
He is remembered in Holywell on H67.07
