Hume, W., A/Smn., 1916
In Barlin Communal Cemetery Extension is the Commonwealth War Grave of Tyneside Z/615 Able Seaman Ward Hume, serving with the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve who died 30/8/1916.

Colin Boyd has provided the following:

Ward was born on 10th October 1895 and was working as a miner living with his parents, Thomas and Sarah at 2, Dene Street, Bates Cottages, Seaton Delaval when he enlisted in the Royal Naval Division on 22nd October 1914.

He was assigned to the Ordnance Company and then joined the Hawke Battalion on 6th July 1916. The Hawke Battalion War Diary records on 28th August 1916 - "4 men of Hawke wounded, two of whom died."

Ward died of wounds in the 6th Casualty Clearing Station on 30th August 1916.

Ward Hume is remembered in Holywell on H67.02
