Jacobs, W., Pte., 1916
On the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France, is the name of 24/1042 Private William Jacobs, serving with the 24th (Tyneside Irish) Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, who died 01/07/1916.

He was the son of John Henry and Lena Jacobs, of 16 Cowpen Square, Blyth.

Morpeth Herald 25/08/1916 carries the following:

Pte. W. Jacobs, Blyth, missing.

Morpeth Herald 17/11/1916 carries a brief obituary:

Private William Jacobs, N.F. Cowpen Square, made the supreme sacrifice on the first day of the Big Push. He had first been reported missing, but it is now officially notified that he was killed.

It is two years since he enlisted, when he was just 18 years of age, and previously he worked in the pit.

William Jacobs is remembered at Cowpen and Crofton on C58.01 and at Blyth on B42.24
