Sgt. Garrod was killed when Vickers Wellington X MF200 of 28 O.T.U. (Operational Training Unit) was lost on a training flight. The Wellington crashed some 15 minutes after taking off from Wymeswold, coming down at Normanton-on-Stour, with the loss of all five crew members.
