In Blyth (Cowpen) Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave with a private headstone of 165049 Flying Officer (Air Bomber) Edward Boon Carss, serving with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve who died 15/04/1945.

The headstone reads:

In loving memory of
Edward
dearly beloved son of
Edward and Sarah Ann Boon
died through injuries received at
Crofton Mill Pit
Feb. 2nd 1922 aged 27 years.
Also the above Edward Boon,
died 11th May 1943 aged 77 years.
Also the above Sarah Ann Boon
died 27th March 1947 aged 70 years.
Also their dear grandson
Flying Officer Edward Boon Carss R.A.F.V.R.
killed on active service
15th April 1945 aged 26 years.
Also their dear grand daughter
Stella Carss
died 2nd June 1955 aged 20 years.
George William Carss
died 28th July 1985 aged 90 years.
At rest.

Flying Officer Carss was serving with 1667 Heavy Conversion Unit. He was a crew member of Lancaster III PR565 which took off from Sandtoft on a training exercise. The aircraft was seen to fly at an angle and nose-dived, breaking up before hitting the ground. All the crew were killed.
