In Blyth (Cowpen) Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of:

3/10698 Private
J. Gallogley
Durham Light Infantry
12th August 1916 age 43.

God watch this lonely spot
It is a gallant soldier's
only cot.

The Newcastle Daily Chronicle 26/08/1916 reports:

"Durham Soldier drowned at Blyth.
The body of Private James Gollogley (sic) of the Durham Light Infantry, was found yesterday on the beach near the west pier at Blyth. Deceased was 44 years of age. He is stated to have fallen into the water while on duty. At the inquest the following verdict was returned: 'Deceased was found dead, having accidentally fallen into the sea near the South Pier at Blyth, and been drowned.'"
