On the end of the War Memorial for 1939-45 in Ridley Park is a slab which reads:

Afghanistan Campaign
Guardsman Michael Sweeney.

Guardsman Sweeney was killed in an explosion in 2010.

17/5/2010 reports proposal to add his name to the town's war memorial.

Journal 12/5/2014 reports on a charity football match played in his memory each year between friends from the army and friends from home. Funds raised go to the Army Benevolent Fund.

He is remembered in Blyth on B42.23
