Menin Gate Memorial

On the Ypres Menin Gate Memorial is the name of 10228 Private Stuart Merrilees, serving with the 11th Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers, attached from the 18th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers who died 11/02/1916.

Stuart Merrilees was born in Blyth on the 6th August 1897, his elder brother William was also killed earlier in 1915. He was the 4th son of James Merrilees, a plasterer, of 42 Coomasie Road, Crofton, Blyth, Northumberland, and his wife Mary, daughter of James Gilroy.

He was educated at Blyth, and had enlisted on the 22nd September 1914, went to France on the 19th September 1915. He was in the 18th Battalion but was in the 11th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers on attachment. He was shot by a sniper whilst working in a Triangle trench. He was unmarried.

The Merrilees' Family had five sons in the Forces.

He is remembered in Newcastle in NUT075 on page 158 and 172
