Wilfred Combs was the son of James and Elizabeth Combs and was born at Bebside in 1887. In 1891 the family are living at Furnace and Bank Top Bebside, in 1901 they are at 49 Beaumont Street Cowpen and in 1911 the family were at 10 Harper Street Cowpen. James and his sons were coal miners.
Wilfred married Sophia Robson 7th August 1911 and a son Wilfred was born in 1912. Unfortunately he died that same year. Their daughter Ada was born in 1914.
In 1914 Wilfred enlisted at Blyth and joined the 14th Northumberland Fusiliers. He went to France 9th September 1915. Corporal Wilfred Combs was killed in action on 29th April 1918 and is buried in Klein-Vierstraat British Cemetery next to Wilbert Greenwood (65525) also of the 14th Northumberland Fusiliers who died on the same day.
The Blyth News 01/05/1924 In Memoriam reads:-
In loving memory of my dear father Corporal Wilfred Combs 14th N.F. killed in action April 29th 1918. Ever remembered by his loving daughter Ada and her mother Sophia.
Sophia had married Stephen H. Robinson in 1923.
Wilfred is remembered at Blyth on B42.24 and at Bedlington on B15.06
