News Post Leader, "50 years ago" Thursday 11/01/1996, reports

"Mrs. N. Wilkinson, of Nixon Terrace, Blyth, has been officially informed that her husband (AB) Ralph Thomas Wilkinson died on New Year's Day - his 44th birthday - as a result of an accident on board HMS Howe and was buried at sea with full naval honours in the presence of the admiral, captain and crew. Wilkinson had been serving in Ceylon, Singapore and other places in the Far East with HM Tugs and was travelling home on HMS Howe to be demobilised when the fatal accident happened."
