Metcalf, W., Pte., 1916
In Heilly Station Cemetery, Mericourt-l’Abbe, Somme, France, is the Commonwealth War Grave of 45708 Private W. Metcalf, serving with the 15th Battalion Durham Light Infantry, who died 18/09/1916.

He was the son of Dora Moran (formerly Metcalf), of 112, Milburngate, Durham, and the late W. Metcalf.

Morpeth Herald 27/10/1916 carries a brief obituary:

Private William Metcalfe [sic], D.L.I., who was a native of Blyth, and worked as a miner at Sleekburn Colliery before enlistment, has died of wounds received in action. He had only been in the fighting theatre about four months, and was 21 years of age.

William Metcalf is remembered at Blyth on B42.24
