On the Runnymede Memorial is the name of 1567621 Sergeant Joseph George Gowans, serving with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, who died 24/02/1944.

Sgt. Gowans was killed when Short Stirling III EF307 OJ-E of 149 Squadron was lost on a mission to drop mines in Kiel Bay. The Stirling, along with its crew of seven, was lost without trace.
