He was the son of John and Mary Ann Thompson, of Dinsdale [House], Blyth.

Morpeth Herald 11/01/1918 carries a brief obituary:

Private [sic] Fred Thompson, youngest son of Mr John Thompson, wine and spirit merchant, Dinsdale House, Blyth, has died from wounds.

He is remembered in Blyth on B42.01, B42.14, B42.24 and B42.34
