On the Tower Hill Memorial is the name of Sailor William Sowerby Harland, serving with the Mercantile Marine, who died 24/08/1917.

In Blyth Cemetery is a family headstone which reads:

Who was killed in action
July 8th 1916, aged 21 years.

Who was lost at sea by enemy action
Augst. 24th 1917 aged 24 years
John S. Harland
Died March 7th 1918 aged 5 years.

Died Decr. 24th 1909 aged 7 years.
Beloved sons of
William & Mary I. Harland of Blyth.

He is remembered in Blyth on B42.24 and on our List of Ships’ crews
