The Northumberland Fusiliers; son of William Beattie The Mains, Simonburn, Estate Joiner, and his wife Thomasina, daughter of William Smith of Matfen; born Simonburn, Humshaugh, 28 Feb. 1893; educated there; was an Estate Joiner at Matfen; enlisted 1 May 1915; served with the Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders from 5 Jan. 1916; was reported missing after the fighting on the Somme 15 Sep following and is now assumed to have been killed in action on that date. Unmarried.
