In Duhallow A.D.S. Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of 751530 Driver James Murray Spedding, serving with the Royal Field Artillery, who died 28/10/1917.

In Hexham (St. Andrew’s) Cemetery is a family headstone which reads:

In loving memory of
Charles
dearly beloved husband of
Hannah Spedding
who died 2nd May 1927,
aged 63 years,
also the above
Hannah Spedding
who died 9th October 1934,
aged 77 years,
also of James Murray,
son of the above
killed in action in France,
28th Oct. 1917, aged 28 years
also their daughter,
Annie Spedding
died 18th Oct. 1961.

Rest in peace

James was born at Sheriff Hill, Gateshead in the first quarter of 1888, the only son of Charles and Hannah Spedding (nee Murray) of The Grammar School Lodge, Hexham. According to the 1911 Census he was working as a grocer.

He also served with the Royal Horse Artillery (Driver 2295) and was part of “C” Battery, 23rd Brigade at the time of his death.
