BIRTLEY (Tynedale)

Lauderdale, T., Gnr., 1917
In the Artillery Wood Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of 772130 Gunner Thomas Lauderdale serving with the “B” Battery, 250th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery who died 01/11/1917.

Susan Carmichael has provided the following:

Thomas was born in the 2nd quarter of 1879, and was the son of John and Jane Lauderdale. John and Jane (nee Richardson) were married in 1862.

In the census of 1881 Thomas was living at Woodhead, Leemailing, Bellingham, Northumberland, with his parents, two sisters and a brother. Four other brothers had already left home. His father was a gamekeeper.

By the 1891 census John was a widower, his wife having died in 1887.

The family lived at Reedsmouth Mill, Reedsmouth, Birtley, Bellingham. Thomas lived with his father, three sisters, a brother, and his father’s brother Anthony, a platelayer.

In 1901 Thomas still lived in Reedsmouth hamlet, with his father and a sister. His father was still a gamekeeper, and he was a gardener.

There is no mention of the family in the 1911 census.

In 1913 Thomas married Kate Eleanor Reed, a servant at Reedsmouth Hall, Birtley, Bellingham. They had a son, John Reed Lauderdale in 1914.

Thomas Lauderdale is remembered in Bellingham on B18.01, B18.02 and in Birtley on B34.01
