Alexander was born in 1894, the son of William and Margaret Hutton.
In 1901 he lived in Fenwick, Stamfordham, Northumberland. He lived with his parents, five brothers and two sisters. His father was a shepherd.
By 1911 Alexander still lived in Fenwick, Stamfordham, but his two oldest brothers had by now left home. His father was still a shepherd, but Alexander, at the age of 16 years is described as 'Not Employed'.
Alexander enlisted in Hexham. He was part of several companies of the Northumberland Fusiliers, he had several service numbers at this time, but when he was killed he was Private number 242387 of the British Army.
He was reported missing, and his next of kin is listed as living in Bellingham.
