On the Thiepval Memorial is the name of 21/1625 Private James Hyde, serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers (Tyneside Scottish) 23rd Battalion who died 01/01/1916.

Derek Johnstone and Carole Fife have provided the following:

James Hyde was born in Cambois, Northumberland in 1898 to parents Samuel Hyde, a coal miner and Mary Hannah Hyde who both came from Staffordshire. The family of James Hyde lived at 21, Gees House, Cambois in 1901 with children Sarah 9, Elizabeth 6, Robert 5, James 3 and Adam who was three months old. At this time his father was a stoneman in the coal mines.

The 1911 Census show James’s family had moved to 2, Chapel Row, Cambois, where his father was a deputy overman in the coal mines. James was 13 years old but not in employment at this time.

Military records show that James enlisted at Bedlington and was in the Northumberland Fusiliers (Tyneside Scottish) 23rd Battalion when he died after serving with the 21st Battalion. His effects went to his mother Mary Hannah indicating he was not married.
