Derek Johnstone has provided the following:
William Robson was born at Choppington, Northumberland about 1894 to parents Robert Robson from Bedlington and Elizabeth Robson from Choppington.
The 1901 Census shows William to be 8 years old living with his family at Second Row, Choppington with siblings Lilias 9, Thomas 6, Mary 3 and Elina not yet one year old.
In 1911, William and the Robson family lived at Strong’s Buildings, Choppington in his widowed mother’s house which was quite crowded with 10 people living in it. At this time William was single and working as a putter in the coal mines.
Research shows a marriage in 1913, registered at Morpeth, between William Robson and Jane Mitcheson who was born at Bedlington and lived at West Sleekburn, Northumberland in 1901. William would have been 21 and Jane would be a similar age in 1913 when married.
Birth records in 1914 show a daughter, Sarah Nicol Robson, which confirms the mother’s maiden name as Mitcheson.
Military information shows that William enlisted at Rennington, a village which is 4 miles from Alnwick in Northumberland. The Pension Index Card for William shows his daughter was Sarah Nichol Robson and that his widow had remarried and was now Jane Watson.
