In the Ovillers Military Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of 23/590 Sergeant James Archibald Patterson, serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers (Tyneside Scottish) 23rd Battalion who died 01/07/1916.

Derek Johnstone has provided the following:

James Archibald Patterson was born in 1892 at Choppington, Northumberland. His parents were Margaret Patterson (nee Richardson) from Bedlington in the same county but details of his father were not located.

In 1901 James, aged 9, lived at Chapel Row, Choppington with his mother who was a widow aged 40. At this time James had a brother, Robert, who was six years old.

The 1911 Census shows James, his mother and brother Robert living at Cross Byron Street, Guide Post, Northumberland in his uncle's house. James was single and working as a rolley way man below ground in the coal mines. James was 19 at this time. At the end of 1911 he married Minnie Coulthard. In 1913 James and Minnie had a daughter Florence May.

Military records confirm James Archibald Patterson was born in Choppington and he enlisted at Bedlington. On his death his effects went to his widow Minnie who was still a widow in 1919. His Pension Index Card records his wife Minnie and daughter Florence May.

James Archibald Patterson is remembered in Choppington on C36.01, C36.02 and C36.04
