Medal Card

Tyneside Scottish

On the Thiepval Memorial, Somme France is the name of 23/ 750 Private Thomas Neesam serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers (Tyneside Scottish) 23rd Battalion who died 01/07/1916.

Derek Johnstone has provided the following:

Thomas Neesam was born at Seaton Burn, Northumberland in 1892 to parents William Thomas Neesam from Houghton le Spring, County Durham and Ann Neesam (nee Bourne) from Felling County Durham.

In 1901 when Thomas was 9, his family lived at Seaton Burn, Northumberland where his father was a coal miner.

Thomas aged 19 is not shown in the 1911 Census, however, his family at this time was living at Windy Nook, Gateshead. Siblings in the family included Ellen born 1887, John 1890, Henry 1892, Robert 1897, James 1900, William 1903, and Harold 1904.

There is evidence to show Thomas married Isabella Smith in 1914 which was registered at Morpeth, Northumberland.

Military records indicate Thomas enlisted at Newcastle and on his death his effects went to his widow Isabella who appears to be still a widow in 1919.

Thomas's brother Henry Neesam also fell.

Thomas Neesom is remembered in Choppington on C36.01 and C36.04
