In the Magnaboschi British Cemetery is the Commonwealth War grave of 15401 Private John William Turner serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers (11th Battalion) who died 15/06/1918.

Derek Johnstone has provided the following:

John William Turner was born at Choppington, Northumberland in 1883 to parents George Turner and Hannah Turner both from Choppington.

In 1901, when John was 8 years old, his family lived at Sunnyside, Choppington. Siblings in the house included George 20, Theodosia 16, Margaret Jane 13 and Ethel 11. At this time his father was a hewer in coal mines.

The 1911 Census records John’s family living at 24, Alexander Terrace, Barrington Colliery Northumberland. Barrington Colliery is located between Choppington and Bedlington Station. Siblings Margaret Jane 22 and Ethel 20 were still in the house. At this time and John was 18 and working in the coal mines as a ‘coal porter’.

Military documents reveal John enlisted at Bedlington and actively entered the conflict in 1915. Pension records identify his father but there is no mention of John being married. CWGC records show his parents still living at Barrington after his death.

John William Turner is remembered in Choppington on C36.01
