In the Ovillers Military Cemetery is the Commonwealth War grave of 20/940 Private Robert Thompson serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers (Tyneside Scottish) 20th Battalion who died 01/07/1916.

Derek Johnstone has provided the following:

Robert Thompson was born at Wandilow (Belford), Northumberland about 1890 to parents John Thompson from Bedlington, Northumberland and Annie Thompson from Embleton.

The 1901 records show Robert as being 11 years old and living in the family home at 4, Whinny Hill Choppington, a village between Bedlington and Guide Post Northumberland.

The 1911 Census shows Robert, aged 21, living in his parents’ house at Swanns Cottages, Whinny Hill, Choppington where he was employed as a brick-maker. His father was a joiner and Roberts’s siblings, John William, 23 and Maggie, 14, are also in the family house at this time.

Military records show Robert enlisted at Bedlington and his Pension Index Card records his mother Annie Thompson. There is no evidence to show Robert was married.

Robert Thompson is remembered in Choppington on C36.01 and C36.04
