On the Thiepval Memorial is the name of 20/1012 Henry George Clark, serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers (Tyneside Scottish) 20th Battalion who died 01/07/1916.

Derek Johnstone has provided the following:

Henry George Clark was born 13th February 1878 at Whittingham, Rothbury. His parents were Henry George Clark from Rothbury and Jane Clark from Felton.

In 1881 Henry lived with his family at Burnfoot Cottage, Netherton, Rothbury, where his father was an agricultural Labourer. At that time Henry was one of 5 children.

By 1891 Henry, now 13, was living at Hepple, where his father was a widower. Henry was married on 19th April 1903 at Hepple, Northumberland to Margaret from Rothbury.

The 1911 Census records Henry living at Freehold Terrace, Stakeford Lane Choppington, where he was employed as a colliery labourer working underground. At this time this record shows he had been married 7 years and they had three children Robert William, 6, Eleanor Isabella, 5 and Violet Annie, 6 months all living in 2 rooms.

Military records confirm he enlisted at Bedlington and on his death his effects went to his widow Mrs M Henderson who appears to have re- married between 1917 & 1919. Available Pension Index Cards record his widow Margaret Clark and the three children listed above.

Henry George Clark is remembered in Choppington on C36.01, C36.02 and C36.05
