Tyneside Scottish

On the Arras Memorial, Pas de Calais, France, is the name of 21/334 Lance Corporal Isaac Black serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers (Tyneside Scottish) 21st Battalion who died 05/06/1915.

Derek Johnstone has provided the following:

Isaac Black was born at Alnwick, Northumberland, in 1885 to parents Thomas Black from Whittingham, Northumberland and Mary Black from Egllingham in the same county. Isaac was six years old in 1891 and living at Swinhoe Village, Belford, where his father Thomas was an agricultural labourer. Also in the house were siblings William, 9, and Thomas, 3.

By 1901 Isaac was living at Alwinton near Rothbury, in the house of his father who was now a widower; Isaac was a working on the land as a labourer. Isaac married Isabell Jane Robson from Rothbury in 1910 which was registered at Morpeth.

The 1911 Census shows Isaac, age 26, living with his wife at Follions Farm, Rothbury. There is no record of any children and Isaac was employed as a horse man on farm.

Military records show he enlisted at Bedlington and was an acting Lance Corporal. Upon his death his effects went to his widow Isabella Jane who was still recorded as widow in 1919. His Pension Index Card records only his wife so it looks like they did not have children.

Isaac Black is remembered in Choppington on C36.01

Is he the "L/Cpl. J. Black" on C36.02?
