Medal Card

Tyneside Scottish

On the Thiepval Memorial is the name of 23/915 Private James Scott serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers (Tyneside Scottish) 23rd Battalion who died 01/07/1916.

Derek Johnstone has provided the following:

James Scott was born about 1872 at Choppington, Northumberland to parents James Scott from Scotland and Alice Scot from Newbiggin, Northumberland. James when 8 years old lived at 4, Single Row, West Sleekburn, Northumberland in 1881. Siblings in the house at this time include Tamar 12, Jane 5, Margaret 4, & Alice aged 1. His father James at this time was a coal miner.

In 1891 James was working as a coal miner living in his parents’ house at 32, Single Row, West Sleekburn.

The records in 1901 show James lived at 31, South Row, West Sleekburn where he was a hewer in the coal mines.

The 1911 Census shows James, now 29, living with his widowed mother and sister Alice at 32, South Row, West Sleekburn, Choppington. He was still single and working in the coal mines.

Military records confirm he enlisted at Newcastle. His Pension Index Card does not show a wife but does list his sister Alice Scott. James Scott was probably not married when he died.

James Scott is remembered in Choppington on C36.05 and possibly in Bedlington on B15.06
