In Bailleul Communal Cemetery Extension is the Commonwealth War Grave of 12784 Private Hugh Martin, serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers (13th Battalion) who died 16/01/1916.

Derek Johnstone has provided the following:

Hugh Martin was born at Blyth about 1881 to parents Andrew Martin from Cramlington Village and Isabella Chisholm from Cullercoats both located in Northumberland. In 1881 Hugh, not yet one year old, was living at Crofton near Blyth Northumberland.

The 1891 Census shows Hugh age 10 and his family residing at 11, Crofton Street, Blyth. By 1901 Hugh had married Ann (Annie) Crisp born 1881 at Sheepwash Northumberland. In the census for that year Hugh and Annie were living at 57, Sycamore Street, Ashington. Hugh was 20 and Annie 21. They had no children at that time.

The 1911 Census shows they had been married 10 years and were living at 26, East Humber, Hirst, Ashington. In the household at this time were children John Thomas, 8, Bella, 5, James, 3 and Nellie, 1 who were all born at Ashington.

Military records show Hugh enlisted at Morpeth and he went to France 9th September 1915. His Pension Index Card records Annie was still a widow with the same four children.

Hugh Martin is remembered in Choppington on C36.01, C36.02 and C36.05
