Henry Appleby

On the Thiepval Memorial is the name of 23/591 Lance Corporal Henry Appleby, serving with 23rd Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, who died 01/07/1916.

Carole Fife has provided the following:

Henry was born in Lumley, County Durham in 1879 to Thomas and Catherine Appleby. He was one of at least 9 children and his father was an agricultural labourer. In 1881 the family were living on a farm at Fencehouses and in 1891 they were on a farm near Harton in South Shields. Henry moved across the Tyne about the turn of the century and in 1903 he married Ellen Dixon from Barrington and they had five children; Henrietta (1904), Ernest (1906), William (1908), Florence (1909) and Harold (1912) At the time of the 1911 census Henry was living at 234, Yard Row, Netherton Colliery and working as a Stationary Engine man.

He is remembered in Bedlington on B15.07 and B15.26 page 121
