In Ovillers Military Cemetery, Somme, France, is the Commonwealth War Grave of 20/715 Sergeant J.H. Campbell, serving with the 20th (Tyneside Scottish) Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, who died 01/07/1916.

In Bedlington (Netherton Road) Cemetery is a headstone which reads:

In loving memory
of
Susan M. Campbell
Beloved daughter of
John & Ellen Laverick
of Bedlington who died
?Sep. 24th 1926 aged 49 years.
Also Joseph H. Campbell

Carole Fife has provided the following:

Joseph was born in 1889 in Bedlington, the youngest son of James and Ann Campbell. In the 1891 and 1901 censuses the family were living at Shiney Row, Bedlington, with his father and older brothers being miners. His father died shortly before the 1901 census, and by the time of the 1911 census Joseph and his brother John were living with their mother in Oliver's Buildings, Bedlington, with the two brothers working at the pit. Joseph married Susan Metcalf Laverick in the last quarter of 1915.

Derek Johnstone has provided the following:

Joseph Hugh Campbell was born at Bedlington in 1889, the son of James and Annie Campbell of Bedlington. In 1911, aged 22, he was single, working as a colliery screener on the surface of the mine and living at Oliver’s Buildings, Bedlington. At this time his mother Annie was a widow and had been for a number of years.

In 1915 he married Susan Metcalf Laverick which was registered at Tynemouth, Northumberland. Joseph enlisted at Bedlington when living at Oliver’s Buildings and was killed in action; his effects went to his widow who was then living at 5, Allgood Terrace, Bedlington. Susan Metcalf Campbell died in 1926.

Morpeth Herald 25/08/1916 carries the following:

Sergt. J[oseph] H. Campbell, Bedlington, missing.
