In Bedlington (Netherton Lane) Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave with a private headstone of 23/1513 Serjeant Frederick Carruthers, serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers who died 30/01/1919.

The headstone reads:

In memory of
Sergt. Fred
Carruthers
of the 23 N.F. who died
at Gosforth War Hospital
Jan. 30. 1919, aged 31 years.
Beloved husband of
Mary Carruthers
Bedlington Station
also William, son of the the above
died in infancy.
At rest.

Frederick was born in 1889 in North Shields, the fifth child of Jane and Thomas, who was a quarry worker. In the 1911 census Frederick is shown as a boot repairer. In 1913 Frederick married Mary Pigg, and this is probably when he moved to Bedlington.. They lived at 2, Pioneer Terrace, Bedlington Station and had two children, William in 1914 and Frederick in 1916.

Frederick himself died ten weeks after the War ended, on 30th January 1919, and is buried in Netherton Lane Cemetery, Bedlington.

He is remembered at Bedlington Station on B163.04
