John was born at Bedlington Bank Top in 1899 to Frank (a sawyer at the colliery) and Catherine, and they later moved to Clayton Street and Shop Row. His mother died when John was 11. He enlisted when he was 18 and joined the Special Reserve Battalion of the Northumberland Fusiliers. In addition to being a training unit this battalion also sent men to top up other battalions, and sent men to serve in Ireland. Wherever he was wounded John survived long enough to return to Bedlington and he died at home. He is buried in Netherton Lane Cemetery in Bedlington, with a CWGC headstone.

He is remembered in Bedlington Station on B163.04
