BEDLINGTON

Stoker, J.R., Pte., 1916
In Regina Trench Cemetery, Grandcourt, Somme, France, is the Commonwealth War Grave of 15110 Private James Ratcliffe Stoker, serving with the 8th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, who died 26/09/1916.

Morpeth Herald 27/10/1916 carries a brief obituary:

Mrs Stoker, of Hirst Terrace, N. Bedlington, has received official notice that her eldest son, James Ratcliffe Stoker, was killed in action on Sept. 26th.

Carole Fife has provided the following:

James's military record shows that he was born in Bedlington and enlisted in West Hartlepool. His legatee was his mother Charlotte, which would indicate that he wasn't married. James was born in Bedlington in 1876, the eldest child of Joseph and Charlotte Stoker. His father was a stone mason at the pit and in 1891 the family were living at Barn's New building at Bedlington. By 1901 the family were living at Coach Road, but although his family continued to live in Bedlington, James moved south of the river, and in 1911 he was working as a stone miner in Houghton-le-Spring and lodging with the King family at 123, Second Street, Houghton-le-Spring. His entry in the Enlistment Book at Hirst Terrace North is probably his parents' address.

He is remembered in Bedlington on B15.02, B15.09 and in B15.26 page 49
