On the Thiepval Memorial is the name of 20/744 Private Robert Dixon serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers (Tyneside Scottish) 20th Battalion who died 01/07/1916.

Derek Johnstone has provided the following:

Robert Dixon was born at Crofton, Blyth, Northumberland in 1978 to parents Robert and Martha Dixon, both from Horton / Cowpen Colliery, Northumberland.

In 1881 Robert aged 3 was living at 6, South Row, South Newsham, a village close to Blyth. Siblings in the house at this time included William Davidson, born about 1880, and Mary Elizabeth, born about 1876.

By 1891 the Dixon family was living at Longbenton in Northumberland when Robert was 13 years old and his father was employed as a coal miner.

At the age of 23, in 1901, Robert was living at Albert Street, Gateshead, County Durham with siblings William 21, Ralph 18, and Annie 15.

In the 1911 Census, aged 33, Robert was shown to be married to Isabella and living at 2, Station Terrace, Cramlington Village, where he was employed as a brickworks labourer. They had 3 children at this time and had been married for 8 years (marriage 1904). Their children were Ellen, born 1904 at Sleekburn, Mary Elizabeth, born in 1905 at Gateshead and Norman born in 1910 at Hazelrigg.

Military records show Robert enlisted at Bedlington and was born in Blyth. His Pension Index Card lists Isabell Dixon, widow, and children Ellen, Mary Elizabeth, Norman and Raymond.

Robert Dixon is remembered in Bedlington on B15.06
