In the Landrecies British Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of 58353 Private William John Angus, serving with the Manchester Regiment (20th Battalion) who died 06/11/1916.

Derek Johnstone and Carole Fife have provided the following:

William John Angus was born 4th April 1887 in Haltwhistle, Northumberland and was baptised 31st July 1887 at the Primitive Methodist Chapel, Haltwhistle. His parents were William Angus, a coal miner, born at Burradon, Northumberland and Alice Angus, born Felling, County Durham.

In 1891, William’s family lived at Guide Post, Bedlington, Northumberland. His family at this time included siblings Ann 12, Joseph 10, and Margaret aged 7; William was four years old.

By 1901 William John Angus was 13 years old and his family lived at 60, Clyde Street, Ashington. At this time he was employed in the coal mines as a driver (pony).

The 1911 Census shows he was 24 years old and his family have moved to West Terrace, Stakeford, Choppington where William was a coal hewer in the coal mines as are all the older male members of the family.

William married Isabella Foster in the spring of 1914 which was registered at Morpeth.

He enlisted at Bedlington. Military records show he was formally in the Yorkshire Regiment with the service number 61036. The CWGC records confirm he was the son of William and Alice Angus and the husband of Isabella Angus 2, Red Row, Bedlington Station.

William Angus is remembered in Bedlington on B15.06 and in Stakeford on S71.02
