Oliver, R.P., Pte., 1920

East Yorkshire Regiment

Richard Pattison Oliver served with the East Yorkshire Regiment probably with the number 29900. He returned from the 1914 – 1918 War after being held as a prisoner of war and died in 1920. The location of his grave has not been established. Richard was aged about 21 when he died.

Derek Johnstone and Carole Fife have provided the following:

Richard P. Oliver was born at 9, Westfield Road, Edinburgh Scotland on 4th January 1899. His father was Ralph Oliver, born at Bedlington, Northumberland, and his mother was Isabell Pattison also born in Bedlington. The Scottish birth records show a different maiden name (Peel), however all other details are correct including date of marriage which took place on 7th June 1897 in Northumberland.

By 1901, the census records show his father Ralph was as widower, so it appears Richards’s mother died in the period between 1899 and 1901. Richard was aged 2 in 1901 and living in his grandfather’s house with his father who is shown as a builder at West End, Bedlington.

Richard's father Ralph married again in 1908, Margaret Arnott who was born in Cramlington, Northumberland , and this was registered at Tynemouth.

The 1911 Census shows Richard was 12 years old and had a step brother, Robert Arnott aged 2. The family were living at Ridge Terrace, Bedlington. Richard’s father’s occupation was builder and monument sculptor.

The Record of Enlistments records that Richard joined the East Yorkshire Regiment with number 29900 when living at Burdon Terrace, Bedlington. Richard was a prisoner of war and returned home but his health must have suffered during that time in captivity and he died young at the age of 21.

Richard is remembered on the memorial in the West End School.

Richard father was the mason who made the Town Memorial cross, did the masonry work for B15.09 in St. Cuthbert's Church and was involved with the memorial in Council School

Richard Pattison Oliver is remembered in Bedlington on B15.01, B15.02, B15.09, B15.21 and B15.26 page 32
