On the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France, is the name of 19811 Private Joseph Burn, serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers (10th Battalion) who died 27/07/1916.

Derek Johnstone and Carole Fife have provided the following:

Joseph Burn was born at Bedlington in 1892 to parents Samuel Burn, born in Bedlington and Alice Burn who was born in Scotland.

In 1901, when Joseph was aged 9, his family lived at Doctor Terrace, Bedlington which included the following siblings Samuel 22, Thomas 21, John William 17 (all miners), Annie 15, Alice 13, Elizabeth 11, David 7 and Abe aged 5. All the children shown were born in Bedlington.

By 1911 Joseph was living at Gordon Terrace, Bedlington, the house of his sister Isabella who married Robert Keir. At this time he was single and still working in the coal mines.

Joseph enlisted at Bedlington and went out to France 25th August 1915 according to his medal records.

Joseph Burn is remembered in Bedlington on B15.02, B15.09 and B15.21
