Tyneside Scottish Badge

On the Thiepval Memorial is the name of 20/369 John Edward Atkinson, serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers (Tyneside Scottish) 20th Battalion who died 01/07/1916.

Derek Johnstone and Carole Fife have provided the following:

John Edward Atkinson was born about 1897. His parents were John T. Atkinson, a hewer in the coal mines, and Dinah Atkinson, who were both born in Bedlington, Northumberland.

In 1901 his family lived at Palmersville, Longbenton and included siblings Thomas 17, Elizabeth 11, Kate 6, Dora 3 and Evelyn aged one month.

The 1911 Census shows John was 14 years old and working as a putter in the coal mines. Others in the household at this time at 3, Hirst Terrace Bedlington included another sister, Edith, aged 6, and his brother Thomas and his wife Mary.

The records indicate John was married at the beginning of 1916 to Elizabeth (Sally on marriage record) Wilkinson who was allocated his effects on his death.

John’s military records show he was born at Horton, a village close to Bedlington and enlisted at Newcastle, however all other information shows he was born at Bedlington.

The name of John Edward Atkinson does not appear on a local memorial.
